TRNC regulates the use of electric scooters

Due to the increasing use of "Electric Scooters" in he TRNC, new regulations have been made in the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Regulation (AE99/1974) regarding the use of Electric Scooters on the roads.

The amendments made by the Council of Ministers to the relevant statute entered into force by being published in the Official Gazette on October 26, 2022. 

The Police Department's statement reads as follows:


Electric Seoter; A headlight not exceeding a maximum speed of 25 km/h, under 350 watts, with wheels, with a brake mechanism, with a non-slip foot board and handle, with a vertical steering mechanism, to give white light at the front and to illuminate the front for at least 20 meters. , means a standing electric vehicle with a red-lighting lamp and reflector at the back, a sound that can be heard from 30 meters, a horn or a similar sound device.


1. Cannot be used by persons under the age of 18.

2. It cannot be used on intercity highways and highways with a maximum speed limit of 50 km/h.

3. If there is a bicycle path, it should be driven on the bicycle path. If there is no bicycle path, it can be driven on the vehicle road, provided that you drive from the left without risking traffic safety.

4. Passengers other than the driver cannot be transported.

5. Items that can be carried on the back should not be carried.

6. Electric scooters should not be driven side by side on the motor vehicle road.

7. It is forbidden to ride scooters on the sidewalks.

8. It is forbidden to be driven by being tied to another vehicle or to be driven by clinging to it.

9. Both hands should hold the steering wheel. It is forbidden to ride an electric scooter with one hand.

10. It is forbidden to drive by performing acrobatic movements.

11. The places where the Electric Scooter cannot be parked will be determined by the Registrar.
