TRNC court sentenced two women to 4 years and 1 month in prison for encouraging prostitution

A court in Lefkosa on Friday sentenced two Nigerian women to 4 years and 1 month in prison each after finding them guilty of encouraging prostitution in the country.

The defendants were arrested in May, 2022 and taken to court on charges of "enjoying prostitution, helping to make prostitution and inciting prostitution."

Delivering the judgement, the chief judge who announced the unanimous decision of the court committee underlined the seriousness of the crimes of "making prostitution, aiding prostitution and incitement to prostitution" committed by the defendants.  

Evaluating detriment of the crimes committed by the defendants, the judge said they committed a crime of human trafficking. He stated that they evaluated the first accused person on committing these crimes even though she was a student in the country, and said that deterrent punishments should be given to those who commit such crimes. 

Touching upon all the issues against and in favor of the defendants, the judge announced that they sentenced the first defendant, 34 to 4 years in prison and the second defendant, 29 to 1 month in prison.

What happened?

The defendants identified only as NB, 34 and AE, 29 were arrested in May, 2022 at their residence in Girne following a complaint that they held a 26-year-old woman in an apartment where they forced her into sleeping with various men in exchange for money between the period of March, 6 and May, 4.
