Student sentenced to one year in prison for stealing

A Nigerian student has been sentenced to one year in prison for breaking into a house in Lefkosa and stealing a wallet with 50TL and 1 Dollar in it.

The verdict was delivered by a court in Lefkosa on Monday.

The accused was identified and arrested in Lefkosa in 2022 and charged to court for "Opening a House, unauthorized use Property, stealing from a Residence.

The court judge said that it was not a surprise that people residing without permission were involved in crime, and underlined the importance of inspecting people residing without permission.

Delivering the verdict, the judge underlined that the crime of opening a house brought against the accused is a very serious crime that imposes a prison sentence of up to 7 years. He stated that the accused entered a house and stole a wallet worth 50 TL and 1 dollar in it.

Touching on all the issues in favor and against the accused, the judge announced that they unanimously sentenced the accused to 1 year in prison. 

In a previous report on the issue, it was mentioned that the accused is mentally unstable and was about to be returned by to Nigeria when he escaped at airport and ran into an apartment.
