Man sentenced to 2 years in prison for violence against his girlfriend

A man who assaulted his girlfriend in Gonyeli has been sentenced to two years in prison after he was found guilty by a Lefkosa court.

The verdict against the defendant named only as EG, was announced on Thursday.

Announcing the decision, the court judge underlined that the crime of grave damage is one of the serious crimes that impose a prison sentence of up to 7 years.

He stated that they are sadly observing the serious increase in violence crimes against women and said that such crimes cannot be tolerated by the courts in any way.

“Any act of gender-based violence that results or is likely to result in physical, sexual or emotional harm to women, or threatens or coercion and arbitrary restriction of freedom in public and private spheres,” the judge said.

He noted that the defendant inflicted bodily harm on the woman, who was his girlfriend at that time, by inflicting more than one violence on him.

Touching upon all the issues in favor and against the accused, he announced that they unanimously sentenced him to 2 years in prison.
