Imam arrested in north Cyprus for marrying and impregnating a 15-year-old girl

An imam has been arrested in Lefkosa, North Cyprus for marrying and impregnating a girl when she was 15-year-old and had just put to birth at a Hospital in Lefkosa on Wednesday at age 16.

The 26-yearold imam identified as Omer Berber, reportedly married the girl who was born in 2002, when she was 15-year-old in a religious ceremony in Turkey last year (March, 2017) and then came to North Cyprus to settle down.

The girl only identified as Civisill put to birth at the Burhan Nalbanoglu State Hospital in Lefkosa on Wednesday.

The situation caused some reaction among officials leading to the arrest of the imam. 

He was taken to a Lefkosa court on the charges of having a sexual relation with a child below 16 and released on bail.
