Livestock farmers resume protests on Monday after weekend break

The Turkish Cypriot Livestock Breeders and Producers Union resumed its protest on Monday against rising prices after the value of the Turkish lira plunged against foreign currencies.

Livestock breeders and farmers who gathered in front of the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources this morning were greeted with a strong police presence.

The protests had been temporarily suspended over the weekend.

The livestock farmers have been blocking the roads leading to the ministry with their tractors since last week, demanding the government to lower the price of barley and increase subsidies.

The President of the Livestock Breeders and Producers Union Mustafa Naimoğluları who met with the Agriculture Minister Erkut Şahali this morning presented him with a new set of proposals.

The proposals include lowering the price of barley, raising the price of raw milk or to allow the import of animal feed.

He argued that animal feed and barley was cheaper in Turkey and that livestock breeders had been left to the mercy of three animal feed factories here in the country.

Naimoğluları also said that the ministry had asked for two hours to discuss the proposals with the Prime Minister and Finance Minister.

Last week farmers had clashed with police as they tried to storm the Agriculture Ministry and march to the Ledra Palace crossing point.

The union had warned that it would step up its protest actions if the government refused to give into their demands.
