Magnitude 5.2 and 5.4 earthquakes felt in North, South Cyprus and Turkey

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake and 5.4 were recorded in Turkey’s southern Antalya province and in Cyprus respectively on Saturday.

According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake occurred at 3.44 p.m. local time (1244 GMT) off the Gazipaşa district. It took place at a depth of 77.58 kilometers (48.2 miles), AFAD added. There were no reports of casualties or damage to buildings.

Also, the earthquake was felt in several parts of North and Southern in Cyprus just the same time it occurred in Turkey. 

According to the TRNC Meteorology Department and the Kandilli Observatory Earthquake Research Institute, the earthquake which happened at about 2:44pm on Saturday was felt at the Alevkaya Earthquake Station at a distance of 176km.

The Kandilli Observatory Earthquake Research Institute, announced that the tremor was also felt in the TRNC at a magnitude of 5.4. It was stated that the earthquake lasted for about 10 seconds.

People from various areas in the divided island said they felt the shake. 

A Nigerian who experienced the quake in Gocmenkoy behind Hastane, Lefkosa, north Cyprus said he and other occupants of his apartment ran outside until there was no more vibration felt. He described the experience as scaring. 

The south Cyprus Seismological Centre said the earthquake felt at about 2:45pm was of magnitude 5.4 and its epicentre was reported at 130 km north of Polis Chrysochous and at a depth of 50 km.

The earthquake was also felt in Rhodes, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.
