Agreement reached for 5G across the island

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiadis have reportedly agreed to pave the way for the rollout of 5G signals across the Island.

According to a statement made by the spokesperson of the UN Peacekeeping Force, in accordance with the agreement that emerged as a result of the intensive work of the Broadcasting and Telecommunication Technical Committee, with the support of the EU, television transmitter frequencies will be removed from the 700 megaherz (MHz) band and switched from analog to digital broadcasting, the old 700 MHz frequency band will also be reserved for 5G mobile services.

In the statement, it was stated that this important agreement was signed by TRNC Presidential Special Representative Ergün Olgun, Greek Cypriot Negotiator Andreas Mavroyannis and UN Secretary General's Deputy Special Advisor to Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar.

According to the agreement reached by Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiadis today, it has been stated that a significant contribution has been made to the 5G efforts on both sides. 

According to the Presidency's statement, the issue, which has been discussed in the Bilateral Broadcasting Technical Committee for more than 2 years, has been negotiated at the level of Special Representative Ergün Olgun and Greek Cypriot Negotiator Andreas Mavroyannis, before the UN Secretary General's Special Representative for Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar.

Following the approval of Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot leader Anastasiades, this agreement was recorded in a statement by the UN Peacekeeping Spokesperson.

According to the agreement reached by the two parties, the 700 MHz band has been emptied and reserved for the 5G service to be used by mobile services, within the framework of the work carried out by the TRNC Ministry of Public Works and Transport. The same situation was established for the Greek Cypriot side.

This important agreement paved the way for the transition from analog to digital broadcasting within the scope of the infrastructure project carried out by the EU Coordination Center affiliated to the Prime Ministry.
