Student hit police with car in Girne, fled scene of incident

A student is currently facing trial for reportedly hitting a traffic police with his car during traffic control in Girne.

The incident happened at about 12:15am on Wednesday, February, 16 on Uğur Mumcu Street in Kyrenia.

He was arrested after the incident and taken to a court in Girne on charges of causing a serious damage.

Police officer who testified in court, said the suspect, on the said night was driving on Uğur Mumcu Street in Kyrenia when police officers tried to stop him for traffic control. In the process, he hit a traffic police, dropped him to the ground, and broke his left wrist. 

Police said the suspect then fled the scene. 

He was later detected at his home. He told the police that he was not the one driving his vehicle but his friend. 

Police said that the suspect's driver's license was confiscated in 2021, due to drunk driving.

He was detained for two days pending trial.
