Man jailed for nine months in south Cyprus after found guilty of bestiality

A 65-year-old man was jailed for nine months on Wednesday by Larnaca district court after being found guilty of 57 counts including bestiality and otherwise harming animals – having repeatedly snuck into a small farm unit and sexually assaulted the livestock.

The owner of the livestock unit in a Larnaca village reported his suspicions to police in February 2018 – stating that for the past month someone had been abusing his animals.

The area was subsequently placed under partial watch by police but assaults on the farm animals continued.

Larnaca police spokesman Charis Hadjiyiasemi told local media that the animals were inspected by a vet who concluded that at least two of them had been sexually abused.

It was not immediately clear which species of animal was involved.

“The specific acts had been repeated until March 10 until suspicions were raised – following investigations and testimonies – against a 65-year-old man from a Nicosia village,” Hadjiyiasemi said.

The suspect was arrested soon after and admitted in his voluntary statement that he had for about five months been carrying out the assaults at the complainant’s livestock unit.

Larnaca district court sentenced the 65-year-old to an immediate jail term of nine months, having been found guilty on charges of causing harm to animals, traumatising them, and for entering private property with the intent to commit a crime.
