Man sentenced to 18 months in prison for robbery

A foreigner in the TRNC has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after he was found guilty of robbery.

The judgement was delivered by a court in Lefkosa on Wednesday.

What happened?

The defendants was arrested on April, 2, 2022 alongside two others in connection with a robbery incident that took place in Lefkosa on March, 31, 2022.

They were taken to court on charges of robbery, injury, forced abduction, serious assault, and illegal carrying of knives. 

Police said they stole a laptop computer in a dormitory room at the Near East University campus in Lefkosa. They also severely battered one Arnold Kipsang Rop, who was a guest at the dormitory by punching and kicking various parts of his body.

Police said the defendant stabbed him on the upper left side of his back and then forcibly took a Samsung A10s mobile phone Arnold Kipsang Rop had in his trousers pocket and beat him up.

Not done, they took him out of the dormitory, put him in a gray rental car and took him to street no:6 in Hamitköy where they beat him up again.

Judgement

The court judge announced the unanimous decision of the committee composed while underlining the seriousness and prevalence of the crime committed by the accused.

The judge stated that they evaluated the defendant's efforts to bring justice with his own hands and committing more than one crime against him.

Underlining that the country is a state of law, the judge emphasized that no one has the right to disturb this peaceful environment.

The judge emphasized the importance of giving deterrent punishments, stating that the crime for which the accused is convicted is one of the crimes that impose a long-term prison sentence and harm the public.

The judge evaluated the facts in favor and against the accused and announced that he be sentenced to 18 months in prison for the crimes he had committed.
