Turkish Cypriot prisoner found dead in a prison in south Cyprus

A 41-year-old Turkish Cypriot prisoner named Tansu Çıdan was found dead in his cell on Thursday night in Nicosia central prison.

According to an announcement by the Central Prison, Tansu Cidan, a Turkish Cypriot was found unconscious in his cell by other inmates around 09:55 pm on Thursday.

Prison staff and medical personnel arrived at the location to provide first aid, however, despite their efforts, the man did not gain consciousness and was later declared dead.

Police said that the man had multiple bruises and injuries on his body.

According to the information obtained, the news site “Alphanews.live” wrote that a Turkish Cypriot prisoner was attacked with a sharp object by a prisoner of Kurdish origin. He stated that there was a violent fight against the backdrop of disagreements over drug issues.

The news also mentions that Çıdan has been constantly attacked and beaten for the last three days.

Çıdan was sentenced to eight years in prison by court order for having a large amount of methamphetamine in his possession.

It was stated by his fellow inmates that Çıdan was found unconscious in his cell, that the nurses provided first aid until the ambulance arrived, but the prisoner could not be revived.

The news site “Alphanews.live”, which states that the health worker confirmed the death of the Turkish Cypriot prisoner and that his family was informed about the situation, stated that a coroner was called to the prison for an autopsy to clarify the circumstances of Tansu Çıdan's death, while the Greek Cypriot police started an investigation on the subject.

In the news on the subject, it was emphasized that the Greek Cypriot police were conducting a "deliberate manslaughter investigation" regarding the death of the Turkish Cypriot prisoner.
