Double earthquake of 6.4 and 5.8 hit Turkey again, felt in Cyprus, Lebanon and north Africa

Another severe double earthquake of magnitude 6.4 and 5.8 on Monday evening hit Hatay, Turkey where the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes caused great destruction two weeks ago and was also felt in Cyprus and several other countries including in Africa. 

The magnitude 6.4 earthquake occured in the border area between Turkey in Syria, where massive earthquakes last week devastated cities killing thousands.

According to information on the website of the Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), the earthquake took place at 20:04 (7:04pm Cyprus time) in the district of Hatay. 

The earthquake was felt all over Cyprus.

The 6.4 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of 16.7 kilometers.

Just, three minutes later, another earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred in Defne district, Hatay, with the epicenter in Samandag district.

According to information on the website of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD),the second earthquake happened at around 20.07 (7:07pm Cyprus time).

The 5.8 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers.

The 6.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Defne district of Hatay shook the Middle East and North Africa as well.

The earthquake was felt in Cyprus and all cities of Lebanon, especially the capital Beirut. Panicked citizens went out to the gathering areas.

The Hatay-centered earthquake was also felt in Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Palestine, Israel and Egypt.

Two witnesses reported a strong quake and further damage to buildings in central Antakya which was hit by two massive earthquakes two weeks ago.

Other witnesses said Turkish rescue teams were running around after the latest quake, checking people were unharmed.

Muna Al Omar, a resident, said she was in a tent in a park in central Antakya when the earthquake hit.

“I thought the earth was going to split open under my feet,” she said, crying as she held her 7-year-old son in her arms.

“Is there going to be another aftershock?” she asked.
