Parents in TRNC withdraw their children from schools until the government certify the building against earthquake

Namık Kemal High School Parents' Association has announced that they will not send their children to school until the expert teams to be appointed by the Ministry of Education conduct an examination at the school and an Earthquake and Life Resilience Report is prepared.

"The lessons that our children cannot attend are not more important than their lives," they said in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement reads as follows:

Dear parents of Namık Kemal High School,

The great pain we experienced due to the earthquake disaster that took place in Turkey on February 6, 2023 is well known. This disaster has made us all question how safe the places we spend time are.

As it is known, most of the Namık Kemal High School, where our children are educated, was built in 1944. Our 79-year-old school has been waiting for a renovation, perhaps even demolition, order for a long time.

It is also said by experts that there is a large earthquake risk in the north of Cyprus. Nowadays, when we are experiencing aftershocks or low-intensity earthquakes, the fact that our children continue to study in this old and tired school worries and frightens us all very seriously.

As the Parents' Association, we have decided not to send our children to school until the expert team appointed by the Ministry of Education visits our school and announces the Earthquake and Survival Resilience Report it will prepare afterwards.

The lessons that our children cannot attend are not more important than their lives!

The Ministry of National Education will be contacted and all initiatives will be taken for the immediate preparation of the relevant report.

With our best regards, we inform the public.
