TRNC Foreign Ministry issues statement about shooting incident between Greek and Turkish Cypriots on Sunday

The TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made a statement about the shooting incident between Greek and Turkish Cypriots on Sunday.

The Ministry said that news that has appeared in the Greek Cypriot media that Turkish soldiers opened fire on three Greek Cypriots who were collecting asparagus in the Bodamya region did not reflect the truth.

Military sources also stated that the news was unfounded and announced that as a result of contact with officials of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), it was learned that the incident was caused by a land dispute between the Greek Cypriots themselves and that they shot one another.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement regarding false news that appeared in Greek Cypriot media claiming that Turkish soldiers opened fire on three Greek Cypriots who were collecting asparagus in the Bodamya region.

The Foreign Ministry stated that they contacted UN officials regarding the issue and that they were informed that the incident arose out of a land dispute between Greeks Cypriots leading them to shoot one other.

“The Greek Cypriot side, which always manipulates and distorts the facts in Cyprus, has once again made baseless claims against our military guarding the borders of our state. The allegations are completely untrue” read the statement.

It continued to note that the Greek Cypriots, who shot each other due to the land dispute between them, also made an effort to blame the incident on the Turkish side.
