Zim student sentenced to 12 months in prison for driving with fake license and living in the TRNC illegally

A Zimbabwean has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for giving police a fake drivers license and living in the country illegally.

The judgement was delivered on Friday by a Lefkosa court. 

The defendant, committed the crime in November, 2022.

The judge announced that they found him guilty and convicted him of forging official documents brought against him. 

He was accused of obtaining a false record, impersonating someone else, and residing in the TRNC without a residence permit.

Delivering the verdict, the judge stated that "As it is easily seen in the records that the accused, who entered the country legally, became illegal, adding that there was an equal amount of negligence by the institutions."

Mentioning all the issues in favor and against the accused, the judge announced that they unanimously sentenced the accused to 12 months in prison.

What Happened?

The defendant was arrested Güzelyurt Mevlevi roundabout on November, 11, 2022, during a traffic check after it was discovered that he gave a fake drivers license with a fake name on it to the police.

The 23-year-old also tested positive for 109 mlg alcohol.

Police said he gave a photo copy of someone's else drivers license and also wrote the name on the license on the alcohol test report instead of his won.
