Man arrested on his return to the TRNC for insulting president Ersin Tatar

A man was arrested on Monday for calling TRNC president, Ersin Tatar “crazy” on social media.

According report by Yeni Duzen, police arrested the man, a 60-year-old London-based Turkish Cypriot, on Sunday night, after trying to enter the TRNC from the Ercan airport.

Ibrahim Buyukarslan, was arrested on his visit to Cyprus.

The post in question was made on June 2, 2022, when the man posted on his social media said about Tatar: “The man is crazy. They should put him in a straitjacket and keep him far away from people.”

The man allegedly admitted that the account where the comment was posted belonged to him.

He is being represented by lawyer and TDP party head Mine Atli, who said it was an issue concerning freedom of speech.

Evaluating the testimony, the court judge stated that the suspect was banned from going abroad. He was ordered to sign in at a police station once a week and had to sign a bail bond of 5,000 TL. Additionally one guarantor from the TRNC had to sign a bail bond worth 100,000 TL
