Man sentenced to 6 years and 6 months in prison for theft and trespassing

A court in Girne has sentenced a man to 6 years and 6 months in prison for theft and trespassing.

The defendant, a Turkish Cypriot Fuat Kayışkayan was sentenced to 6 years and 6 months in prison by the Girne Assize Court for the crimes of illegally entering a house, theft and trespassing in Kyrenia in 2022.

Delivering the judgement on Friday, April, 28, the judge stated that the accused broke into 6 different houses in Kyrenia between September, 1-30, 2022 and stole 167,000 lira worth of jewelry, 2,000 pounds and 300 Euros.

The judge said the defendant victimized 6 people with the crimes he committed.

The judge pointed out that the accused had 26 priors for crimes he committed between 1999 and 2015, and that he committed the same crime over and over again.

The judge stated that they evaluated against the defendant's breaking into 6 different houses, making 6 people victims, inflicting losses of 167,000 liras, 2,000 pounds and 300 Euros on the complainants, selling some of the jewelery he stole to the jeweler and causing a loss of 3,900 liras to the jeweler in question.

The judge stated that they considered the defendant's acceptance of the case as partly a mitigating factor in the family situation.

Noting that the accused cannot be sentenced to any punishment other than imprisonment, the judge stated that a person who disturbs the society, damages the environment of trust, and commits the same crimes again without remorse should be kept away from the society for a long time.

He was sentenced to 6 years and 6 months in prison.
