Turkish man accused of sexual harassment against 3 women in Lefkosa, lawyer denies claim

The lawyer of a young Turkish man who was arrested by Turkish Cypriot police for allegedly harassing 3 women on the same day in Lefkosa has said his client is innocent of the charges brought against him.

The suspect named only as ED, a Turkish citizen, and a resident of Lefkosa was arrested in Lefkosa over the weekend and taken to court on charges of "Sexual Harassment and use of fowl Language."

Police claim he sexually harassed 3 women within 20 minutes apart on the same night in Lefkosa.

Police told the court that the suspect at around 12:00am on Saturday, April, 1 in Lefkosa harassed a woman in Üsküdar street, Küçükkaymaklı, Lefkosa. 20 minutes later, at around 12:20am on the same day, two other women were also sexually harassed by an unidentified man on Aknar street, Hamitköy, Lefkosia.

Police also stated that there are similar unsolved issues that have taken place in Lefkosa lately regarding the issue, and that the camera footage will be examined within the scope of investigation carried out on the matter.

He was then given a 3-day detention order so as not to interfere with the investigation process.

He was brought back to court again on Thursday, April, 13. 

Speaking in court, his lawyer denied the allegations saying that; "An examination of the videos revealed that he had no connection to the incident." 

Police also told the court that an unidentified male person in Lefkosia made an fowl speech after he sexually harassed a woman walking in front of him on the same street.

The police stated that on the same day and in the area, an unknown male person sexually harassed two women walking in front of them on the same street.

The police said that during the further investigation into the incident, it was determined that the suspect was involved in the aforementioned crimes and he was arrested with a pending court order.

Police stated that there were still camera footage to be investigated regarding the issue and that the suspect did not have legal status in the country.

The suspect's lawyer claimed that if the video footage had been examined, it would have been revealed that he had no connection with the incident.

The suspect was again ordered to be detained for 5 days in order for the video footage to be examined.
