Alcohol and speed are the biggest cause of road accidents in the TRNC - Police Directorate

Alcohol and speed has been reported as the biggest cause of road accidents in the TRNC.

In a statement by the TRNC Traffic Director of the Police General Directorate, İbrahim Ulusoy, the biggest reason for traffic accidents is alcohol and speed.

“From January 1, 2023 to April, 27, 2023, 14 people lost their lives and it was determined that 6 of these accidents were related to alcohol.”

Ulusoy said, “Despite the alcohol inspections carried out by the police, this number is still very high” adding that “Citizens should be more conscious about alcohol”.

Ulusoy, said they are carrying out other studies in addition to inspections to prevent citizens from driving drunk. "We are working on what we can do about taxi or public transportation so that an alcoholic citizen does not get behind the wheel," he said.

Ulusoy said that in addition to these services, studies were carried out on informative and warning public service announcements for distractions while driving.

İbrahim Ulusoy said that besides the drivers talking on the phone, drivers browsing social media were also detected.

"This is one of the most common incidents we encounter in traffic accidents and inspections," he said.

"It seriously causes distraction." "All the focus of attention of the driver goes to the phone and he is unable to look at the road." "This is not only dangerous for us, but they also put the other side at risk," he said.

“The only reason why the driver came out of the vehicle that was destroyed during an accident without even bleeding from the nose is the seat belt.” “The seat belt allows you to be thrown in the vehicle and not to get injured during an accident. "I'm driving slowly, don't say nothing will happen to me," he said.

Delivering a message to drivers due to the approach of the 7-13 May traffic week,  Ulusoy said, “During the traffic week, we will send a text message to raise awareness of the citizens and remind them of the traffic rules,” adding, “Lessons will be given and videos will be watched in schools and educational institutions to raise awareness among students. Traffic education starts at a young age.
