Cause of Lefke forest fire discovered

The fire in Lefke forest on Friday appears to have been caused by a spark between electricity cables, report claims on Saturday.

The cause of the fire which broke out near Yeşilırmak village in Lefke on Friday was made public on Saturday.

According to report by Yeniduzen, following investigations into the causes of the fire, it was determined that strong winds blew tree branches into contact with electrical wiring, which created sparking, setting fire to the dry grass.

The fire had broken out at around 1:00pm on Friday and quickly spread across a large area, due to strong winds.

After a large-scale effort involving five aircraft, three from south Cyprus, one from the TRNC and one from Turkey, the fire was put out late in the evening on Friday.

The fire burned pine, olive, carob, and fruit trees and maquis in are area of 700 square metres.
