Man stabs doctor in Famagusta, few days after he stabbed a lawyer in Lefkosa

A medical doctor was stabbed and seriously injured by a patient while receiving treatment at a private clinic in Famagusta last week.

The incident happened in a private clinic located in Famagusta on Saturday, May, 4.

The suspect named only as C.E., a Turkish Cypriot reportedly stabbed and injured Dr. Sadrettin Tuğcu in the stomach with a knife because he did not give the suspect the desired treatment.

The Dr., a Urology Specialist at Famagusta State Hospital, was working in his private hospital when he was attacked and seriously injured.

Investigation into the incident revealed that the suspect, had on Thursday, May, 4, stabbed and injured a lawyer with a knife in Lefkosa.

Reacting to the incident, the President of the TRNC Bar Association, Hasan Esendağlı said that the suspect in question could not be identified for 3 days despite the fact that the incident was captured on security cameras.

"The negligence of the police, who has not detected the suspect for 3 days and did not do what is necessary, in the emergence of today's result is not acceptable," Esendağlı said.

TRNC president, paid him a visit at the hospital on Sunday. He described the attack as unacceptable.

Meanwhile, six organization in the health sector issued a joint statement on Saturday afternoon calling for the necessary legislation to be in place, noting that “if there is violence, health services will not be provided”.

We, as the Cyprus Turkish Medical Association, the Cyprus Turkish Doctors Union, the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Doctors, the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Dentists, the Cyprus Turkish Nurses-Midwives Union, the Cyprus Turkish Nurses-Midwives Union, condemn violence in health and in every field, and the ‘managers’ of social violence. We call for immediate action to prevent it. We would like to make it clear that we will not normalise violence in health.

“The law on violence in health, which will protect health workers, should be passed urgently and it should be ensured that we practise our profession safely. Legal studies that will prevent violence in health should be prepared with all stakeholders and passed immediately. It should be known that providing health services will not be possible if violence continues in healthcare and measures are not taken”.
