Plastic bag ban postponed to December, 31, 2024

The ban on plastic bag which was scheduled to come into force on June, 29, 2023, has been postponed by 1 year and five months to December, 31, 2024 as a result of a lawsuit filed on the grounds that 6 months were insufficient for the transition.

With this new development, the plastic bags, which was supposed to be completely prohibited as of June, 29, 2023, and was postponed to December, 31, 2024 for legal reasons, the price for the bag was increased from 25 Kurus to 1 TL.

Speaking on the issues, the TRNC Environment Department Director, Abdullah Aktolgalı noted that the price of the bags sold in the markets was increased to 1 TL as of June 5, and called on the markets that give free plastic bags to be reported.

Explaining that the plastic bags will be increased 2-3 times until December, 31, 2024, when nylon bags will be banned, Aktolgalı expressed that they hope these price hikes will discourage the use of plastic bags.

Pointing out the harm of plastic nylons to the environment, Aktolgalı urged the citizens to reduce the use of plastic.

Stating that they frequently inspect the markets for the sale of nylon bags, Aktolgalı also asked the citizens to report the markets that give free plastic bags.
