Two students sentenced to 7 years in prison each by a court in North Cyprus for drug crimes

Two students were on Monday sentenced to 7 years in prison each for drug crime.

The judgement against the two defendants, OEI and AU, who are students in the TRNC was delivered by the Girne High Criminal Court on Monday, July, 31.

The defendants were caught with 3 and a half kilos of narcotic substance worth 2 and a half million TL in the 'Earthquake Operation' carried out in Girne on June, 9, 2023. After the investigation, it was determined that the defendants were selling drugs.

Reading the unanimous decision of the court, Senior Judge, Mine Ozankaya and Judge Temay Sağer, Mine Ozankaya stated that drug crimes are the most common type of crime in the country.

Stating that drugs are the type of crime that occupies the agenda of high criminal courts the most, the judge stated that deterrent and exemplary punishments should be given to those who commit such crimes.

The judge stated that the amount of the drug, which is the subject of the case before them, was extensive, and that the defendants had disposed of the substance for commercial purposes, and stated that these issues were considered as an aggravating factor to their disadvantage. The judge announced that they sentenced the defendants to 7 years in prison for the cases they were convicted of.
