Man who stole 136,730 TL from Lemar Supermarket arrested 10 years later

A Turkish Cypriot man who stole the sum of 136,730 TL from a Lemar Supermarket where he was working and fled the country has been arrested on his arrival back in the country 10 years after the incident.

The suspect named only as HK was arrested on Wednesday, Sept., 20, 2023 at the Ercan Airport.

He committed the crime on August, 8, 2013 and fled the country on August, 9, 2013.

He was taken to court on Thursday, Sept. 21 on charges of theft.

Police said the suspect was working at a Lemar Supermarket operating in Lefkosa when himself along with his accomplice named only as MH who work as an accountant in the market stole 136,730.34 TL from the safes of the market.

He was declared wanted following the incident.

Police said an investigation into the matter could not be carried out at the time because the suspect left the country for 10 years and immediately after the date of the incident.

The police noted that if the suspect was released, it could affect the safe conduct of the investigation, and requested that he be detained for one day in the first place.
