Student caught with drugs in Girne found to be living illegally in north Cyprus

An Eswatini national who was found to be living illegally in the country was found with drugs during a search carried out on him by the police in Lefkosa.

The suspect named only as IDG who was stopped for checks during police operation in Lefkosa on Friday, September, 1 was found with drug residue.

He was arrested and taken to court on Thursday.

Police officer who testified in court said the suspect who was deemed suspicious during routine inspections carried out by Crime Prevention Branch teams in Lefkosa was found with a grinder containing drugs.

Police said immigration records were checked and it was determined that the suspect had been living illegally in the country for 641 days as of November 29, 2021. 

Police said that the suspect was brought to court twice, and a total of 6 days' detention order was issued against him.

Police the suspect in a verbal statement, said that he bought jute-type drug from a person he did not know in Lefkosia for 400 TL for 3 grams.

Noting that the investigation was completed, the police requested that the suspect be detained in custody.

The court evaluating the testimony given ordered that the suspect who has no legal status in the country, be sent to prison for a period not to exceed 20 days.
