TRNC sentenced man to 10 months in jail for escaping Covid-19 quarantine in 2022

A man Turkish man has been sentenced to ten months in jail for escaping from a Covid-19 quarantine hotel in 2022.

The judgement was delivered by a court in Lefkosa on Friday.

The man, named as Duran Gul, 38, escaped from the Mavi Kalem student dormitory in Demirhan, near the Erulku supermarket, at around 1:00am on March 13, 2022.

He was in prison when he tested positive for COVID-19 during the pandemic period. He was then sent to stay in the dormitory to quarantine.

He escaped by rappelling down the wall of the building using a bed sheet, before returning the same day at 1.30pm and surrendering to authorities.

Delivering the judgement, the judge said Gul had committed “a serious crime”, and that “deterrent punishments should be given to those who commit such crimes, to set an example”.

The court found him guilty and unanimously sentenced to 10 months in prison.
