Man detained over accident that caused serious injury to 18-year old Turkish Cypriot

A Nigerian man has been detained after he was involved in an accident that resulted in the injury of an 18-year-old pedestrian in Lefkiosa. 

The unfortunate incident happened at around 7:10m on Saturday in Mustafa Ahmet Ruso Street, Lefkosa when the suspect named only as MOO, 20 hit and seriously wounded an 18-year-old man named Zemzem İclal Büte.

He was arrested and taken to court on Sunday.

Police officer who testified against the suspect in court said the suspect was driving carelessly when he hit Zemzem İclal Büte, who was trying to cross the road.

Zemzem İclal Büte, was thrown to the right side of the road after he was hit and fell in front of a vehicle coming in the opposite direction and had stopped after witnessing the accident.

The pedestrian, who was seriously injured in the accident, was taken to the intensive care of the Lefkcosia State Hospital. Police said he was unconscious and his life was in danger.

Police announced that the suspect was arrested after the accident and an investigation was launched.

Noting that a blood sample was taken from the suspect for drug testing, the police stated that the surrounding security camera footage would be examined and that there were statements to be taken, and asked for the suspect to be detained for 2 days in the first instance.
