Man steals company money in north Cyprus, bets with it

A young man has been detained after he was found to have used money stolen from a company for betting.

The suspect, named only as UA, 24, a Turkish national was arrested on Saturday, Oct. 14 following a complaint that he stole money from his place of work and played betting with the money.

He was taken to court on the same day on charges of theft.

Police who testified in court said the suspect who worked as a sales manager in a phone store operating in Ercan Airport, stole 28,800 TL, $120 and 160 Euros of the money collected between 11-14 October 2023 and kept it for personal use.

Police stated that the suspect stated in his statement that he was betting with the money he stole.  

Police said that workplace officials are checking retrospective accounts and that the amount stolen may increase.  

Noting that the investigation was continuing, the police requested that the suspect be detained for 3 days.
