Accident avoided at Zeytinlik junction in Girne due to faulty traffic light

An accident was narrowly avoided near the Zeytinlik junction in Girne on Thursday due to a faulty traffic light signal. 

The incident happened at around 8:30am on Thursday.

A Turkish Cypriot driver, named Salih Olgun Mehmet who reported the incident to the police said the traffic lights on the south side of the Zeytinlik junction suddenly changed from red, then amber to green within seconds.

He said that suddenly the traffic started flowing and that he only narrowly avoided an accident.

"Suddenly the traffic flow started, we survived the accident".

Mehmet warned: "I hope and pray that those responsible for managing us will solve this malfunction and similar problems without accidents that will result in deaths, injuries or damages."

Recall that a driver died in a collision caused by faulty traffic lights at the Ezic junction of the ring road on Monday, 23 October.

Mehmet Gürtunç, 79 died after crossing the junction while the traffic lights were not properly synchronized. 

Family members shared footage taken at the junction the next day, saying that there was a signalisation error in the traffic lights.
