TRNC to reduce prison release time due to overcrowding of prisons in the country

Due to overcrowding in TRNC prisons, the TRNC Council of Ministers has announced a "90-day" amendment to the Conditional Release Regulation of prisoners under the Prison Disciplinary Law, and the "period required for the right to apply to the Parole Board" was shortened.

It was noteworthy that this development came after the news that the new prison building was also full.

According to the information in the Official Gazette, two articles in the fourth article of the regulation have been changed.

Within the scope of the change, convicts in prison will be able to apply to the Parole Board if they have served 1/3 of their sentences. Before the change, the right to apply was valid for those who had served 1/2, or half, of their sentence.

Another change covers convicts who were convicted of Premeditated Murder or Attempted Murder and Premeditated Murder or Attempted Murder.

According to the change, prisoners who commit these crimes will have the right to apply to the Parole Board after completing half of their sentence, that is, 1/2. The right to apply for those who committed these crimes was previously valid for those who had served 3/5 of their sentence.

According to the information published in the Official Gazette, these changes will be valid for 90 days starting from November 2.
