Man detained for sexually assaulting a hitchhiker in north Cyprus

A Greek Cypriot man was detained by the police in north Cyprus for sexually assaulting a man he gave a lift to in Lefkosia, north Cyprus.

The suspect, PS, 69 was arrested on Thursday, February, 29 and taken to a court in Lefkosia on Friday, March, 1 on allegation of sexually assaulting a man he took into his car.

The man allegedly picked up a 20-year-old male hitchhiker while driving on the Near East Boulevard in Lefkosia, before grabbing the hitchhiker’s hands and then “placing his genitals on the hitchhiker’s trousers”.

The incident reportedly occurred on the morning of February 19.

Explaining their findings about the incident in court, the police claimed that the suspect, who was driving on the Near East Boulevard in Lefkosia on the morning of Thursday Feb., 29 sexually assaulted the person he picked up as a hitchhiker.

Police said that the suspect was detected while he was crossing to north Cyprus from the Lokmacı crossing point in Lefkosia on Thursday and was arrested with force after he tried to escape.

Stating that the investigation is continuing, the police stated that the suspect did not admit the crime of sexual assault in his statement.

The suspect's lawyer argued that his client was beaten. 

The judge ordered the suspect to be detained for 3 days and to be examined by a doctor.
