Price of Ekmek bread increased to 15 TL

The north Cyprus Bakers' Association has announced an increase in the price of local bread (ekmek) from 13.50TL to 15 TL.

This is coming following the increase in the prices of electricity and domestic gas.

The Association's President Ömer Çıralı in a statement to media houses on Thursday announced that the loaf of bread, which was previously increased to 15 TL by the decision of the Bakers' Association, but was reduced to 13 and a half TL with the intervention of the government, will now be sold for 15 TL effective from March, 2.

The ‘government’ had at the beginning of February attempted to fix a maximum price of 12TL  for a loaf of bread, however, they were met with collective resistance on the part of the bakers, who declared the decree to be in violation of the north Cyprus’s laws on competition.

They said, “under the conditions of the bread and bakery competition law, each bakery has calculated its own costs and offered our products to people at affordable prices so far.”

“In this regard, we have determined each bakery’s own costs separately, taking into account the recent excessive price increases, under free market conditions,” they added.
