Student without a resident permit beat taxi driver in Güzelyurt

A foreign national has been detained by court order for living in north Cyprus illegally after he was arrested for assaulting a police officer.

The individual identified only as OY, an international student in north Cyprus was arrested at around 9:30pm on Sunday April, 7 in Güzelyurt.

Police said he hit a taxi driver while under the influence of alcohol and was found to had been living illegally in the country for 129 days. 

He was taken to a court in Güzelyurt on Monday for the crimes of "battery", "inappropriate behavior" "remaining without a residence permit" and "drunkenness".

Police told the court that the suspect punched a taxi driver MA in the chest and hit him while he was under the influence of alcohol in front of the Güzelyurt Police Department.

Police stated that the suspect was disturbing the environment by shouting and was arrested with force.

As a result of the investigation, it was determined that the suspect had stayed in the TRNC without a residence permit for 129 days since September 30, 2023. 

Police stated that the suspect did not accept the crime of assault brought against him and accepted other cases.

Police stated that the investigation was completed and requested that the suspect be sent to prison to be tried for the crimes of "battery", "inappropriate behavior and attitude", "remaining without residence permit" and "drunkenness".

The judge who evaluated the request sent the suspect to prison for a period not exceeding 20 days until their case was ready.
