Daily physical activity key to better sleep: Research

Engaging in moderate to vigorous physical activity throughout the day can significantly improve sleep quality, according to a recent study by researchers from the University of South Australia.

The study, published in “Sleep Health,” monitored the daily routines and sleep habits of over 2,500 adults and children. Researchers adjusted participants’ activities to observe the impact on sleep.

Findings revealed that participants with higher levels of daily physical activity experienced fewer sleep difficulties, better sleep quality, and reduced fatigue.

Lead researcher Dr. Lisa Matricciani highlights the importance of daily activities beyond bedtime routines for optimal sleep.

“Many people focus on immediate pre-sleep adjustments like avoiding screens or alcohol,” Dr. Matricciani said. “Our research underlines the importance of the entire 24-hour cycle and the activities we perform throughout the day.”

The study suggests that simply increasing sleep duration by going to bed earlier might not be as effective as incorporating physical activity.

“Being more active during the day might be a relatively easy change for most people to adopt,” Dr. Matricciani concluded.
