Woman arrested for living in north Cyprus without a resident permit after her husband reported her to the police

A woman whose husband reported her to the police for causing trouble in the house was arrested for living in north Cyprus without a resident permit.

The woman named only as SF, was arrested by Turkish Cypriot police on Friday May 24 after her husband reported her to the police and was found to be an illegal resident during police omvestigation.

She was taken to the Lefkosia district court at the weekend on charges of staying in the country without a "residence permit".

Police in a court statement said the suspect's husband, RF, 32 approached the Demirhan Police Station at around 1:00am on Friday May 24 and reported that his wife was abusive to him, threw items away, and that he wanted her to be warned.

Police said the suspect was taken to the police station for a statement, and during the immigration check, it was determined that she had stayed in the country without a residence permit for 193 days since November 13, 2023.

Police said her husband had a work permit, and since she did not apply for a residence permit, she did not benefit from his immigration permit and became an unauthorized resident.

Police stated that the investigation was completed and requested that the suspect be sent to prison for a period not exceeding 15 days.

Evaluating the testimony given in court, the judge stated that the crime of residence permit is a crime that carries a prison sentence of up to 6 months and is becoming more common day by day, and ordered the suspect to be sent to prison for a period not to exceed 20 days.
