More than 20 irregular migrants mostly of African origin picked up in south Cyprus early Thursday morning

More than 20 irregular migrants mostly of African origin who crossed from north Cyprus to south Cyprus were detected and picked up in Nicosia early Thursday morning.

Greek Cypriot police said they picked up 21 irregular migrants in the Sopaz area in Nicosia around 4 am.

Among them was one pregnant woman who has been taken to hospital as a precaution and one minor.

They were transferred to a temporary reception centre, police said.

Police said this has become “practically a daily phenomenon” but the size of the groups vary.

The irregular migrants seek asylum after crossing over into the country.
