Three students detained for spending counterfeit money in North Cyprus

Three students who were detained in connection with counterfeit money were taken to court on Tuesday. 

The 3 suspects were arrested and detained in connection with counterfeit money on Monday, October, 4 in Lefkosa and taken to court on charges of keeping and putting counterfeit money into use.

Police said they were found with counterfeit bank notes totaling 4,000 Euros.

Police officer who testified in court said the suspects identified only as S.I, A.S and I.G, on Monday, October 4, went to Türkiye İş Bankası Branch in Lefkosa for a transaction when two of them who are residents in Lefkosa handed some 500 Euro banknotes with a total of 2,500 Euros believed to be counterfeit, to the cashier.

The police were invited to the bank which led to their arrest. 

Police said a search was made at the residence of one of the suspects on the same day in Gönyeli, with a court order, and during the search, another suspect who was a resident at the same address, was found with 1,500 Euros in cash. The money believed to be counterfeit was seized as evidence.

Police said investigation into the matter has just begun and that there are statements to be taken and investigations that need to be made.

They were ordered by the court judge to remain in police custody for 3 days for investigation to be conducted safely.
