Pakistani girl found wandering alone in buffer zone, twin sister missing after parents tried to enter south Cyprus from north

A three-year-old girl from Pakistan was found wandering alone in the buffer zone between north and south Cyprus on Tuesday morning. 

Her twin sister was also reported missing.  

Greek Cypriot police in a statement said the girl's Pakistani parents who tried to cross the green line dividing Cyprus in the dark early hours of Tuesday had lost their twin children. 

The girl was later found roaming around at about 4:00am and was delivered to social service while the boy remained missing and their parents whereabout unknown at the time she was found.

The parents of the twins were later identified.

Police said the parents, who are of Asian origin, reside in the north and attempted to cross to the south late on Monday but lost their two children due to limited visibility.

One of the girls managed to reach the buffer zone while “the second girl has not yet been located and efforts are being made to find her.

UN officers are using a helicopter to search for the minor in the buffer zone, Andreou added, while police are carrying out their own search within the buffer zone near the area where the other girl was found.

The girl will remain under the responsibility and supervision of the social welfare services.
