Number of students in the last semester in universities in the TRNC approached 110 thousand

The total number of students in universities in the TRNC in the 2021-2022 academic year reached 110,000, in a country where 22 higher education institutions operate, including Atatürk Teachers Academy.

Looking at the figures in the last 4 years, there has been an increase in the number of TRNC and foreign students, while the number of Turkish students has decreased.

When the 2018-2019 and 2021-2022 academic years are compared, the number of newly registered foreign students has more than doubled. The number of newly registered foreign students, which was 6,185, rose to 12,907.

The Higher Education and Foreign Relations Department of the Ministry of National Education has prepared a booklet in which 22 higher education institutions are introduced within the scope of the “Student Friendly Island” project.

In the booklet, which contains information about the universities carrying out educational activities in the northern part of Cyprus and the Atatürk Teachers Academy, statistical information for the last four years is also included.

Figures for the last 4 years

In the last four years, there has been an increase in TRNC and foreign students studying in higher education institutions, while a decrease in Turkish students.

The number of TRNC students was recorded as 12 thousand 508 in the 2018-2019 period, 12 thousand 255 in the 2019-2020 period, 13 thousand 427 in the 2020-2021 period, and 13 thousand 914 in the 2021-2022 period.

While the number of Turkish students was 54 thousand 875 in the 2018-2019 period, this number decreased to 50 thousand 274 in the 2019-2020 period, to 46 thousand 561 in the 2020-2021 period, and to 43 thousand 101 in the 2021-2022 period.

On the other hand, the number of foreign students, which was 35 thousand 318 in the 2018-2019 period, increased to 41 thousand 349 in the 2019-2020 period, 43 thousand 120 in the 2020-2021 period, and 51 thousand 280 in the 2021-2022 period.

There was a decrease in the number of Turkish students

According to the figures of the last 4 years, the number of TRNC students from 12 thousand 508 increased to 13 thousand 914, while the number of foreign students from 35 thousand 318 reached 51 thousand 280. On the other hand, the number of Turkish students decreased from 54 thousand 875 to 43 thousand 101.

Number of newly enrolled students

According to the new enrollment data, 3 thousand 51 students from TRNC registered at universities in the 2018-2019 period, 2 thousand 884 students in the 2019-2020 period, 3 thousand 365 students in the 2020-2021 period, and 3,592 students in the 2021-2022 period.

While the number of newly registered students of Turkish nationality was 11 thousand 564 in the 2018-2019 period, this number decreased to 10 thousand 200 in the 2019-2020 period. The number, which rose to 11 thousand 574 in the 2020-2021 period, decreased to 10 thousand 148 in the 2021-2022 period.

While the number of newly registered foreign students was 6 thousand 185 in the 2018-2019 period, this number decreased to 8 thousand 783 in the 2019-2020 period and to 7 thousand 749 in the 2020-2021 period. In the 2021-2022 period, this number reached 12 thousand 907.

-Double increase in newly registered foreign students

In the last 4 years, the number of newly registered students of TRNC nationality has increased from 3 thousand 51 to 3 thousand 592, while this number of Turkish nationals has decreased from 11 thousand 564 to 10 thousand 148. On the other hand, the number of newly registered foreign students increased more than twice, from 6 thousand 185 to 12 thousand 907.

The total number of students approached 110,000.

The total number of students was recorded as 102 thousand 701 in the 2018-2019 period, 103 thousand 878 in the 2019-2020 period, 103 thousand 108 in the 2020-2021 period, and 108 thousand 295 in the 2021-2022 period.

The 22 higher education institutions operating in the northern part of Cyprus and the years they started are as follows:
