Student jailed for 3 and a half years for drug crime

A court in Lefkosa has sentenced an African to 3 years and 6 months in prison for importing drugs into the country.

The verdict was delivered on Tuesday, September, 4.

The accused was arrested in connection with cannabis type drugs seized in an operation organized by the Narcotic Police in Famagusta on November, 7, 2020. He was charged with "illegal drug purchase" and "illegal drug possession.

A cannabis type drug substance weighing approximately 1 kilogram was found in a suitcase in the wardrobe in the bedroom of the accused , in 3 separate papers. 

Police at the time said he voluntarily gave a statement on the same day, and confessed that he had bought the drugs in his possession from a person at Ercan Airport about 3 weeks prior to his arrest.

Delivering judgement on Tuesday, Judge Barkın announced the unanimous decision of the committee.

Barkın underlined the seriousness and prevalence of the crime committed by the accused.

Barkın stated that they evaluated against the defendant's importation of the subject drug and the existence of a similar case pending.

Barkın emphasized the importance of imposing deterrent punishments, stating that the crime for which the accused was convicted was one of the crimes that entailed a long-term prison sentence and harmed the public.

Judge Barkın stated that the accused should be given serious deterrent punishment for such crimes and evaluated the facts in favor and against them and stated that they sentenced the accused to 3 years and 6 months in prison for the crimes he had committed.
