69 accidents occurred in the first week of the year, 22 injuries reported

A total of 69 traffic accidents occurred in the country in the last one week since the turn to of the new year with a total of 22 injuries recorded.

A total of 69 traffic accidents occurred in the country last week. In the accidents, 22 people were injured. While speed was the first cause of accidents, drivers were reported mostly for not obeying traffic rules and signs.

According to police statement, 69 accidents that occurred during the period covering January 2-8 resulted in 22 injuries and 50 damage. 

19 of the accidents were caused by driving fast, 15 of them were due to careless driving, 10 of them were not stopping at the intersection, 11 of them were following closely and 14 of them were caused by other factors.

The accidents, in which a total damage amount of 2 million  963 thousand TL occurred.

30 of them took place in Lefkosia, 19 of them in Girne, 11 of them in Famagusta, 5 of them in Güzelyurt and 4 of them in Iskele.

During the same period, a total of 9,523 vehicle drivers were checked in the traffic controls carried out by the police throughout the country, while 993 vehicle drivers who were found to have committed crimes were reported and legal action was initiated against them. While not obeying traffic signs and signs ranks first among crimes, the distribution of crimes is as follows:

“Failure to obey traffic signs and signs (158), speeding (154), talking on a mobile phone while driving (150), driving without a license for navigation (118), driving without a seat belt (78), driving without inspection (48), uninsured or outside the scope of the vehicle (36), reckless driving (29), drunk driving (24), dangerous driving (14), driving without an "A" road use permit (14), driving without a driving license (9), driving at traffic lights non-compliance (6), driving a motorcycle without a protective helmet (4), carrying more than its tonnage or dangerous cargo (2), not having a taximeter in the taxi or not operating the meter while carrying passengers or operating fraudulently (2) and other traffic offenses.”
