Greek Cypriot man who racially assaulted a Congolese woman sentenced to 8 months imprison

A 44-year-old Greek Cypriot man who was seen in a viral video kicking woman from Congo who was holding her 2-year-old baby on the floor has been sentenced to eight months imprisonment for racist attack.

The shocking incident that went viral happened near Larnaca port in July 2022 after the woman dared to complain about a dodgy car she bought from the man.

The man was found guilty on four charges, including assault and causing actual bodily harm to the 29-year-old African woman. The Court also found a racial motive in the defendant’s act.

In the video, the man is seen violently punching and kicking the woman on the ground holding a baby, then attacking an African man who tried to stop him.

Police had launched a search and arrested the assailant, following a complaint filed by the woman, going through CCTV footage from cameras in the area.

What had happened

It was on Wednesday, July, 13, 2022, when a viral video showed the moment a Greek Cypriot man physically assaulting a young woman from Congo while she was holding her 2-year-old child.

The man is shown hitting and kicking a woman holding a young child in her arms while she sit on the pavement. The same man then attacks another man from Africa who tried to intervene. He then went back to the woman and kicked her in the back. 

The woman ended up with bruises and scratches on various parts of her body as a result of the attack, hospital examinations showed.

A Greek Cypriot man then appear to push the violent man away from her.

The man, a 43-year-old Greek Cypriot man was later arrested.

According to report, the woman had bought a car from the man the previous week after being reassured that the car had no issues but had asked for the return of her €920 after she discovered the car had mechanical problems. 

She had taken the car to the mechanic to confirm the car’s condition, whereby the mechanic informed her that the car actually had several problems.

When the woman told the man about the car’s issues, he refused to discuss any possible solutions and told her that “nothing could be done to him” in his country and proceeded to attack her.
