Student under investigation for allegedly raping his girlfriend in Girne

A 29-year-old Nigerian residing in Kyrenia is currently under investigation for allegedly raping his girlfriend.

The suspect named only as AA, 29 is said to have committed the crime on Thursday, August, 24, when he reportedly raped a 19-year-old woman believed to be his girlfriend in an apartment in Girne. 

He was arrested on the same day following a complaint by the victim and then taken to court in Girne on Friday on charges of rape and serious assault.

He was brought back to court again on Monday.

Police officer who testified in court said the suspect physically assaulted the victim by trying to strangle her before he raped her on the grounds that she did not want to continue with the relationship.

Police said the suspect's house in Kyrenia was searched and the pillowcases, bedspreads and sheets were taken as evidence.

The 19-year-old girl was checked by a doctor and a report was obtained.

Police said the swap samples taken from both the suspect and the 19-year-old girl and other evidence would be examined.

Noting that the investigation is continuing, the police demanded that the suspect be detained for 8 days for investigation purposes.
