South African man sentenced to 30 Months in prison by a TRNC court for theft

A student who was facing trial after a bank seal was found in his possession and was found to have stolen 150,000 TL from a house has been sentenced to 30 months in prison by a Lefkosa court. 

The verdict against the defendant, named only as WVN, a south African who was charged to court for theft was delivered by a court in Lefkosa on Monday, Sept., 25.

Delivering the judgement, the court judge said the seriousness of the crimes committed by the defendant and their increasing prevalence day by day, the judge announced that they unanimously sentenced the defendant to 30 months in prison.

What Happened?

The suspect on, April, 19 was arrested and taken to court on charges of theft, breaking and entery.

Police in a court statement said the suspect, between the hours of 10:00pm to 10:35pm on April, 18, found 2 stamps belonging to a bank during a search carried out at the residence of the suspect in Gonyeli regarding a theft issue.

A further investigation on the matter revealed that between the period of December, 3, 2021 – January, 2, 2022, the suspect had entered an apartment located in Goneyli through the balcony, opened a 2×1 meter sized aluminum sliding glass in the section of the living room of the apartment and entered a bedroom where he took 40,000TL cash he found in the wardrobe of the bedroom. He then exited through the entrance door of the residence after entering and stealing.

The police also informed the court that the suspect, again in Gönyeli, between April, 15-16, went to the same apartment and stole 120,000 TL cash, found in the wardrobe in the bedroom of the residence belonging to one S.P.  

The police said that the suspect voluntarily testified that he had committed the aforementioned crimes.
