Four students arrested for illegal residency brought to court

Four foreigners who were found to be living legally in the TRNC were arraigned in court on Monday and detained in police custody.

The arrested are; KAO, 42, Nigerian, AMİ.B., 21, Sudanese, JKK, Congolese and OJO, 20, Nigerian.

They were identified and arrested by Turkish Cypriot police during a routine check at around 5:30pm on Sunday in  Martyr Hüseyin Ruso Street, Lefkosa and then taken to a court on Monday on charges of illegal residency.

Police officer who testified against them in court, said the four of them after their arrest were taken to the Lefkcosia Judicial Branch where an immigration check was carried out. 

During the check, the police found that KAO, AMI.B. and JKK had been illegal for 365 days; while it was determined that OJO had been living illegally in the country for 694 days, sinc November 6, 2021.

The police stated that an investigation was launched against the arrested suspects and that a correspondence would be made to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Stating that it will be investigated what the suspects did while they were illegally in the country, the police officer requested that they be allowed to detained them for 3 days for investigation purposes.  

Two other people were also arrested and detained by the police for illegal residency.

In another development, a 26-year-old man named only as SH was arrested at Ercan Airport on Sunday while trying to enter the country with a fake passport.
