Hit and run driver caught at home

A man who hit two cyclists on the Lefkosa-Kyrenia main road and drove away has been arrested by Turkish Cypriot police.

The incident happened around 6.30 am on Monday on the 2nd and 3rd kilometers of the Lefkoosia - Kyrenia Main Road when two cyclists Berkal Volkan, 36 and Nurettin Ulvi, 46 were hit and injured by a motorist who failed to stop and drove away.

Both cyclists were taken to the Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital in Lefkossia for treatment. Nurettin Ulvi, was taken to the emergency room and Berkal Volkan was taken to intensive care unit as his condition was critical.

The suspect named only as İ.AO, 28 was identified in home and arrested at around 12:30pm on the same day. He was taken to court on Tuesday. 

Police said a test carried out on the suspect showed that he was high on 195 promil alcohol.

Police said the suspect had left the crashed vehicle with a friend to deliver to a mechanic in Lefkosia.

The judge ordered the suspect to be detained for 3 days.
