Two male prisoners sentenced to 18 years in prison for raping a fellow male prisoner at the Lefkosia prison

Two men who were accused of raping a 21-year-old prisoner at the Lefkosia prison have sentenced to 18 years in prison after they were found guilty of rape.

The case against the suspects, IU and HT, among the four defendants who were tried for raping the 21-year-old who was awaiting trial at the Central Prison.

While the defendants were sentenced to 18 years in prison, the hearings of two other suspects, AG: and İ.T., who were being tried for the same crime and did not accept the accusations, continue.

Delivering judgement, the court chief judge said on February 10, 2023, 4 defendants detained in the Central Prison sexually raped one TB, who was an unregistered detainee, in his cell ward located in the C-2 ward, after seriously beating him.

He said they threatened to kill him if he complained about this incident, and threatened him with violence. The judge said the suspects, IU and AG raped TB for the second time a day later.

A complainant was conveyed to the guards on duty there on February 11, and that during the medical check-ups at the Lefkosia State Hospital on the same date, it was determined that his anus was torn and bleeding, and that he suffered serious and bodily harm.

The judge said the other defendants did not accept their cases and that the judicial process was continuing, but IU and HT accepted the accusations.

The defendants İU and HT has been imprisoned many times before for various crimes and committed the crime of rape while they were waiting in prison to be tried.

The judge noted that rapes in prisons have increased and that deterrent punishments should be given to people who commit and tend to commit such crimes.

They were both sentenced to 18 years in prison each considering that they committed the crime of rape twice and also considered the fact that the defendants were remorseful, which contributed to the early manifestation of justice, and were young criminals.
