Greek Cypriot man tries to pay fine with loads of coins

The Limassol District Court in south Cyprus was thrown into an unusual situation on this week when a young man attempted to pay a 500-euro fine using a 50-kilogram suitcase filled with small coins.

The fine, imposed for driving without a license and insurance, was originally levied in 2022. Today, the man arrived at the courthouse with the suitcase, containing 15,500 coins of 1, 2, 5, and 10 cents, hoping to settle his dues.

However, court officials did not accept the cent coins, advising him to exchange them at a bank.

The man expressed his frustration, stressing that his method of payment should have been accepted as the coins were still legal tender.
