Driving under the influence of alcohol in north Cyprus may attract a fine of over 400,000 TL!

Before you get on that wheels in drunken mood, make sure you have over 400,000 TL in your account in case you get caught driving under the influence of alcohol in north Cyprus.

To prevent the increase in traffic accidents in north Cyprus, a draft law has been submitted to amend the Criminal Code and according to the draft law, drunk drivers can be fined up to 413,805 TL.

The bill prepared to prevent the increase in traffic accidents was published in the Official Gazette on Sunday.

In the draft law, the prison sentence for fatal accidents, which provides for up to 7 years of imprisonment, was increased to 10 years.

The "Road Safety (Amendment) Draft Law", which provides deterrent penalties against the increasing number of traffic accidents in the country, was presented to the public. If the bill becomes law, people who drive under the influence of alcohol may be fined up to 15 times the gross minimum wage. In other words, considering the gross minimum wage, which is currently 27,587 TL, drunk drivers can be fined up to 413,805 TL.
